Strategy in Action

How to shape for the long term and take action in the short term

The sports business industry is increasingly dynamic, industry players rapidly grow their top-lines, and addressing global markets is imperative. In the Excellence Program “Strategy in Action”, students consider where the sources of revenue for their companies are in this volatile and competitive environment, and how they can position themselves to gain a competitive edge. Students are familiarised with concepts and tools enabling them to choose routes for development within their industry and to derive focused strategic initiatives. Through the industry-specific application of classic strategic development tools, students learn to find the balance between the formulation of long-term visions and sufficient flexibility in implementation to also be able to react to unexpected market developments. They then have the opportunity to implement the strategic initiatives they have developed in the course of a case-based simulation.

  • How can I achieve profitable growth beyond my existing core business?
  • How should I deal with Big Data, new marketing approaches and the eventisation of sport in the long term?
  • How can I react in a swift and targeted manner to market and environment changes?

Guiding Lecturer

Prof. Dr. Sascha L. Schmidt

Sascha is the Academic Director of SPOAC – Sport Business Academy and the Director of the Center for Sports and Management at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management. He is thus able to ensure that the program contents at SPOAC are always in line with the latest state of research. As a former McKinsey consultant and entrepreneur, his focus is firmly fixed on practical applications. He has conducted scientific studies in collaboration with the German Football League (DFL), German Football Association (DFB) and countless Bundesliga clubs. During his time at Harvard Business School, he deepened his knowledge of case study-based teaching methods, which constitute an essential component of the participant-focused learning concept at SPOAC.
